I have a good feeling about the MCU right now. It’s more of a hunch than anything, but I really think the lowest is behind us. The content is slowing down for the most part, more “quality-over-quantity” practices are apparently happening, and what I think the most important thing is that there’s only one MCU movie dropping this year, and it’s Deadpool & Wolverine, an R-rated movie that I’m pretty confident will be at least good. About four years after Disney ended up buying out Fox (a big monopoly on the film industry), we’re finally reaching the point where things like the mutants and the X-Men as a whole are starting to flow in. With this announcement, though, they’re taking us back to the 90s with a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series.

Not many plot points are official just yet, but X-Men ‘97 picks up right where the original show left off: The X-Men are challenged like never before when they’re faced with a dangerous and unexpected future after the apparent death of Professor Charles Xavier. Like the first MCU series from this year, Echo with its Marvel Spotlight banner, X-Men ‘97 will sport the first ever Marvel Animation banner, which will be largely separated from the MCU as a whole. Other upcoming shows with this banner include Marvel Zombies and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which are both set outside of the main timeline continuity.

Not every cast member from the original run returns for X-Men ‘97, but the massive cast includes Ray Chase (Malignant, Final Fantasy XV), Jennifer Hale (Mortal Kombat 1, Ratchet & Clank: Rfit Apart), Lenore Zann (X-Men: The Animated Series, Stage Mother), George Buza (X-Men: The Animated Series, The Adventures of Sinbad), Holly Chou (The Big Sick, BLUE EYE SAMURAI), Christopher Britton (), Alison Sealy-Smith (X-Men: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series), Cal Dodd (X-Men: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series), A.J. LoCascio (LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Jurassic World Evolution 2), Matthew Waterson (Fallout 4, Starfield), Adrian Hough (Assassin’s Creed III, The Fod), J.P. Karliak (Migration, The Loud House), Isaac Robinson-Smith (Resident Evil: Death Island, Spider-Man 2), Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead, Invincible), Eric Bauza (Krapopolis, the *should-be upcoming* Coyote vs. Acme), Catherine Disher (X-Men: The Animated Series, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis), Chris Potter (Heartland, The Pacifier), Ron Rubin (Sailor Moon, X-Men: The Animated Series), and Theo James (The White Lotus, the upcoming The Gentlemen).

It’s not confirmed yet if this will be a binge-drop of all 10 episodes or a weekly release, but the first season of X-Men ‘97 will hit Disney+ on March 20th, 2024.
