Right now, CinemaCon is underway in Las Vegas and there’s been a good amount of reveals on what’s coming out not only this year but the very beginning of the year. Most of the trailers shown there aren’t typically released to the public, but there’s one exception to this, and it’s admittedly pretty polarizing. Joker, the most successful R-rated movie of all time, has made its etch into popular culture for the relatively short time it’s been out. Of course, everyone at least thought about a sequel, whether or not they wanted one or even needed one. For a while, I was personally in the camp of “Joker didn’t really need a sequel.” As details and the eventual confirmation of what the sequel would be doing, I got increasingly curious about what this could end up being. Now, after the five year wait, we now have the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux.

Not too much plot details are officially out about the sequel yet, but the big new addition is that Joaquin Phoenix’s Clown Prince of Crime has his own Harley Quinn, being brought to the screen by none other than Lady Gaga. The other massive element being added comes with the movie’s tone, and it’s that it will be a jukebox musical. The song featured in the trailer below is “What the World Needs Now,” which was made popular by Jackie DeShannon. There’s no real indication of what kinds of songs will be included in the film yet, but if the song in the trailer is worth anything, it feels like it’ll take a range of influences.

Phoenix (Walk the Line, the upcoming Eddington) and Zazie Beetz (Invincible, Atlanta) reprise their roles from the 2019 movie, with new cast members including Gaga (A Star is Born, House of Gucci), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, The Tragedy of Macbeth), Catherine Keener (Get Out, The Adam Project), Jacob Lofland (A House on the Bayou, Free State of Jones), Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge, the upcoming Despicable Me 4), Ken Leung (Lost, Old), and Harry Lawtey (Industry, The Pale Blue Eye).

Shot entirely in IMAX format, Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters from Warner Bros. on October 4th, 2024, the five-year anniversary of the first film.
