It feels like there’s been a boom in smaller-scale horror in recent months. If anything, I can think of two big examples right now. Late Night with The Devil is a big one, even to the point that it made headlines when it ended up making $666,666 on its opening Sunday, on top of being very well received across both critics and audiences. What seems to be the shocker, though, is the low-budget sequel to the critically panned Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey actually being a critical hit. The movie we’re talking about here, though, is more similar to Late Night with The Devil in the way that it’s actually made a festival run and has an interesting filmmaking hook to it.

Coming from the director of the film Chris Nash, In a Violent Nature is described as an “ambient slasher.” In the Friday the 13th-style movie, we follow an undead, mute killer who targets a group of teenagers in the wilderness. The big twist, though, is that the events will be observed largely from the killer's perspective, never cutting to the teenagers until they meet their maker. When this premiered at Sundance in January, Nash had said that he wanted to deconstruct the slasher subgenre of horror, pulling from filmmakers like Terrence Malick and Gus Van Sant to pull off the vision he had for the film. Imagining a filmmaker like Malick making a slasher is such an insane idea that I think it’d work, so I’m definitely going to tune in for this.

The cast will be rounded out by Ry Barrett (Cult Hero, Still the Water), Andrea Pavlovic (Learn to Swim, the upcoming Cruel Intentions), Cameron Love (If I Should Die, Forest Drive), Reece Presley (Psycho Goreman, Resident Evil 4), Liam Leone (The Pestilence, A Ghost Ruined My Life), Charlotte Creaghan (So Much Tenderness, Claire), Lea Rose Sebastianis (The All Golden), Sam Roulston (Mood, The Beaverton Digital), Alexander Oliver (Womb Envy, Cup of Cheer), Lauren-Marie Taylor (Friday the 13th Part 2, Loving), and Timothy Paul McCarthy (Beyond the Chamber of Terror, Psycho Goreman).

In a Violent Nature will hit theaters from IFC on May 31, and it will eventually land on Shudder later this year.
