Box Office Report: ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ Exceeds Expectations

Box Office analysis is provided by Daniel Garris of BoxOfficeReport.com.

Weekend Estimates Update - July 7th, 2023 to July 9th, 2023:

Sony and Blumhouse's Insidious: The Red Door debuted in first place at the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $32.65 million. Heading into the weekend, it had been expected to be a close race for first place between Insidious: The Red Door and Disney's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but ultimately Insidious: The Red Door exceeded expectations and took first place fairly comfortably this weekend. In addition to exceeding expectations, Insidious: The Red Door was also off to a very strong start with the film's modest production budget in mind. Insidious: The Red Door opened 10.4 percent higher than the $29.58 million start of 2018's Insidious: The Last Key (the previous installment in the series) and delivered the second largest opening weekend ever for an Insidious film (behind only the $40.27 million debut of 2013's Insidious: Chapter 2). Patrick Wilson (who also directed the film) and Rose Byrne returning to the series looks to have helped Insidious: The Red Door at the box office this weekend. Insidious: The Red Door was also likely helped out this weekend by there not having been a break-out performance by a horror film since Evil Dead Rise back in April.

Insidious: The Red Door started out with $15.23 million on Friday (which included an estimated $5.0 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 4PM), declined 33.7 percent on Saturday to take in $10.10 million and is estimated to decrease 27.5 percent on Sunday to gross $32.65 million. With an estimated opening weekend to opening day ratio of 2.14 to 1, Insidious: The Red Door was front-loaded this weekend, but that isn't too surprising for a high-profile horror sequel and isn't too concerning given the strength of the film's opening weekend performance. With that said, Insidious: The Red Door is likely to remain front-loaded going forward, especially given that the film's lackluster C+ rating on CinemaScore is the lowest CinemaScore rating ever for a film in the Insidious series. Critical reviews for Insidious: The Red Door have been mostly negative.

The news got even better for Insidious: The Red Door as the film was also off to a strong international start. Insidious: The Red Door grossed an estimated $31.4 million from 52 international markets, which places the film's global launch at $64.1 million. Estimated debuts for Insidious: The Red Door by international market included $5.8 million in Mexico, an impressive $3.7 million in the Philippines, $2.8 million in the United Kingdom, $1.9 million in France, $1.5 million in India, $1.2 million in Malaysia, $1.1 million in Brazil, $1.1 million in Germany, $1.0 million in Australia and $1.0 million in Peru. Insidious: The Red Door will open in Indonesia this coming Wednesday (July 12) and the following week will open in South Korea on Wednesday, July 19 and in Spain on Thursday, July 20.

Disney and Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny placed in second with an estimated $26.50 million. That represented a sizable 56.1 percent decline from last weekend's opening weekend performance. This weekend's decline wasn't too surprising, as 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull declined a similar 55.3 percent in its second weekend (to gross $44.75 million). Although overall word of mouth may be slightly stronger for the Dial of Destiny than it was for the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the three-day opening weekend performance for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was deflated a bit from that film having a full Thursday opening day. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has grossed $121.21 million through ten days of release. While that is towards the lower end of scaled back expectations, it's still quite disappointing given the film's very expensive price-tag and that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had grossed $215.64 million in eleven days through the end of its second Sunday. The competition for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is about to get much tougher as well, with Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One opening on Wednesday (and already having select Early Access shows on Monday night).

Internationally, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny grossed an estimated $31.8 million this weekend from 52 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $126.7 million and current global haul to $247.9 million. Estimated totals for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny by international market through Sunday include $16.8 million in the United Kingdom, $11.4 million in France, $9.5 million in Japan, $7.5 million in Australia, $7.4 million in Germany, $7.2 million in Spain, $6.0 million in South Korea, $4.5 million in Italy, $4.2 million in Mexico, $3.3 million in Brazil, $3.2 million in China and $2.7 million in the Netherlands. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny grossed an estimated $4.5 million from global IMAX screens this weekend, which places the film's global IMAX total at $19.8 million.

After an already impressive start during the midweek, Angel Studios's Sound of Freedom continued to impress this weekend with an estimated third place take of $18.22 million. That brings the six-day start (including Monday previews) for Sound of Freedom to $40.21 million. Sound of Freedom, an action thriller set in the world of child trafficking, was directed by Alejandro Monteverde, stars Jim Caviezel and also features Mira Sorvino, Bill Camp, Kurt Fuller and Eduardo Verástegui. Given how strong initial pre-sales were for Sound of Freedom during the midweek, Sound of Freedom holding up as well as it did once the weekend hit is a clear sign that the film's very strong word of mouth is already making a significant impact at the box office. In addition to receiving a perfect A+ rating on CinemaScore, Sound of Freedom currently boasts a 99 percent Verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sound of Freedom grossed $5.28 million on Friday (which represented a 42.9 percent increase over Thursday), increased a very encouraging 37.3 percent on Saturday to gross $7.25 million and is estimated to decrease 21.6 percent on Sunday to gross $5.68 million. As was the case with Insidious: The Red Door this this weekend, Sound of Freedom also played especially strong given the amount of average showtimes per location it looked to be getting. Sound of Freedom represents the second film for Angel Studios as a solo distributor and by the end of Tuesday Sound of Freedom had already out-grossed the $12.08 million final gross of Angel Studios's His Only Son. Before much longer Sound of Freedom will be zooming past the $52.10 million final gross of Lionsgate's Jesus Revolution. Given the strength of the film's word of mouth and that Sound of Freedom has strong appeal among faith-based audiences and segments of the population likely to be less interested in more typical Hollywood fare, there is potential for Sound of Freedom to remain a strong alternative choice for moviegoers in the weeks ahead, even in the face of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Disney and Pixar's Elemental had another very nice hold this weekend to place in fourth with an estimated $9.60 million. Elemental declined a slim 20.8 percent from last weekend and has now grossed $109.19 million through 24 days domestically. Following a relatively modest opening weekend performance back in June (especially given the film's expensive price-tag), the well-received Elemental already has a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.69 to 1. Elemental will likely have another strong hold next weekend, though the following weekend things could start to get iffy for the film when Oppenheimer and (especially) Barbie enter the marketplace. Elemental also continued to remain even more impressive internationally this weekend by taking in an estimated $30.0 million from 48 international markets. Respective totals for Elemental stand at $142.7 million internationally and at $251.9 million globally. Elemental debuted with an estimated $3.8 million in the United Kingdom this weekend and was down only 21 percent in holdover markets (the same as the film's domestic hold). Elemental is performing especially strong in South Korea, where the film has grossed $25.8 million through Sunday. Additional estimated totals for Elemental by international market through Sunday include $15.4 million in China, $13.5 million in Mexico, $9.0 million in France, $8.0 million in Australia, $6.9 million in Brazil, $5.4 million in Germany, $4.9 million in Argentina and $4.8 million in Italy.

Sony's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse rounded out the weekend's top five with an estimated $8.00 million. That represented a solid 33.4 percent decline from last weekend. With a 38-day domestic gross of $357.648 million, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now estimated to have just surpassed the $357.578 million estimated current gross of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to become the highest grossing release thus far this summer domestically and the second highest grossing release of 2023 thus far domestically (behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie). Internationally, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse grossed an estimated $9.2 million this weekend from 63 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $284.6 million and the film's current global haul to $642.2 million.

Lionsgate's Joy Ride underwhelmed with an estimated sixth place debut of $5.85 million. That was below already modest pre-release expectations, which had tended to range from $7 million to $9 million heading into the weekend. Joy Ride had a similar opening weekend performance as the $6.01 million three-day start of Lionsgate's The Blackening last month; however, it should be noted that Joy Ride played in 2,820 locations this weekend, while The Blackening opened in 1,775 locations. Joy Ride has gone over very well with critics, but that doesn't look to have helped the R-rated comedy at the box office this weekend. After receiving a modest B- rating on CinemaScore, it also appears that Joy Ride isn't going over as well with audiences as it has with critics, though at the same time the film's current 83 percent Verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes is more promising. Joy Ride was directed by Adele Lim and stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu.
